6 Health Benefits of CBD Oil — and a Look at Side Effects

Cannabidiol oil, or CBD oil derived from cannabis, is a popular natural remedy for many ailments. CBD oil benefits include pain relief and relaxation without any mind-altering effects.

People make CBD oil by extracting it from the cannabis plant and diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut oil or hemp seed oil. It’s one of more than 100 chemical compoundsTrusted Source called cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant, Cannabis sativa.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, which means it causes the sensation of getting high that’s often associated with cannabis. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.

CBD can be found in various products online and in stores, including dietary supplements, bath soaks, drinks, and food.

We’ve partnered with Medterra to bring you this article covering six evidence-backed health benefits of CBD.

1. May relieve pain

Cannabis has been used to treat pain since 2900 B.CTrusted Source., with use originating in Chinese medicine. Researchers believe that components like CBD may be responsible for these effects.

The endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating functions like pain sensation. The body produces neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids that bind to cannabinoid receptors.

StudiesTrusted Source show that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by targeting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters. Preclinical evidence also suggests that it may be effective
rheumatic diseases like fibromyalgia, per research from 2021Trusted Source.

2. Could reduce symptoms related to some mental health disorders

CBD oil has shown promise as a treatment for some mental health disorders leading many people who live with these conditions to become interested in this natural treatment approach.

A 2020 literature reviewTrusted Source on CBD and mood disorders found that multiple studies suggest CBD has properties that may help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and even psychosis.

A small 2019 studyTrusted Source also found that CBD was effective in reducing PTSD-related symptoms, including nightmares, in adults.

That said, the available research has not been sufficient for doctors to recommend CBD as an actual treatment for such conditions.

3. May alleviate certain cancer-related symptoms

CBD may help reduce some cancer-related symptoms and side effects related to cancer treatment, such as nausea, vomiting, and pain, according to research published in 2022Trusted Source.

However, more research is needed to determine whether CBD should be used more regularly in cancer symptom management.

4. May have neuroprotective properties

CBD may provide benefits for those with neurological disorders. A 2022 studyTrusted Source suggests that nabiximols (Sativex) spray containing both CBD and THC may help reduce pain and muscle spasticity in people living with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Research from 2017 indicated that CBD oil helped reduce seizure activity in children with Dravet syndrome, but it also caused some adverse reactions.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)Trusted Source has approved one CBD product, Epidiolex, for the treatment of several seizure disorders and seizures caused by tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). TSC is a rare genetic disease that causes benign tumors to grow in the brain and other body areas.

There’s also some limited evidence that CBD may also be effectiveTrusted Source in improving the symptoms of other neurological conditions, such as:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Huntington’s disease
  • autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • motor disorders like cerebral palsy

5. May benefit heart health

High blood pressure is linked to higher risks of several health conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and metabolic syndrome.

Research indicates that CBD may be beneficiaTrusted Sourcel for people with high blood pressure because it can influence the contractions of the heart muscle and help widen blood vessels.

For example, one study from 2020Trusted Source that included 26 healthy men found that treatment with 600 milligrams of CBD for 7 days led to significant reductions in blood pressure in the short term compared with a placebo group. However, the effect was lost after 7 days.

While these findings are encouraging, more research into the potential benefits of CBD treatment on heart health is needed.

6. Other potential benefits

CBD has been studied for its role in treating a number of health issues other than those outlined above.

Though more research is needed, CBD is thought to potentially provide the following health benefits:

  • Substance misuse treatment: CBD may be helpfulTrusted Source for relieving anxiety and depression in people who have a dependence on certain drugs, including heroin, per preclinical evidence.
  • Possible extension of life in those with glioblastoma: Treatment with a combination of CBD and THC may help extendTrusted Source the life of some people with an aggressive form of cancer called glioblastoma, yet research is limited.
  • Possible improvement in sleep: CBD might help improveTrusted Source sleep in people with certain sleep disorders, though more research is needed.

What are the drawbacks of CBD oil?

CBD is considered generally safe, but it may causeTrusted Source adverse reactions like diarrhea, changes in appetite and weight, and fatigue in some people.

Other side effects, including abnormal liver function test results, drowsiness, sedation, and pneumonia, have been reportedTrusted Source in childhood epilepsy research.

But these effects could stem from CBD interacting with other medications, such as clobazam, as it can interactTrusted Source with various drugs. It’s always a good idea to speak with a qualified healthcare professional about the right dosing for you and your risk of experiencing side effects.

Low quality CBD products are common in the marketplace, so it’s important to choose products that have been third-party tested for quality and purity.

Hemp-Derived Delta-9: Benefits, Uses, and 2018 Farm Bill

THC has become complicated since the 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law. The chemical compound itself hasn’t changed, but it’s now subject to vastly different laws nationwide.

The terminology around THC can also be confusing. If you’re wondering what hemp-derived delta-9 is, it’s actually less complicated than it sounds. Delta-9 is a form of THC, so hemp-derived delta-9 is just THC that comes from hemp instead of cannabis plants.

No matter where it’s sourced from, all delta-9 is the same. The compound binds to the same cannabinoid receptors in the body and imparts the same trademark high at the right dose.

The main difference between hemp-derived and standard THC is the extraction process. Since hemp plants are legal on the federal level, many manufacturers extract delta-9 from hemp rather than marijuana, which is still illegal federally.

What Is Hemp-Derived Delta-9?

Delta-9 THC is the most prominent psychoactive compound in Cannabis sativa plants, including marijuana and hemp. Marijuana strains contain varying levels of potent THC, creating their famous psychoactive effects.

Hemp plants, on the other hand, have lower levels of THC due to federal limits. Industrial hemp contains no more than 0.3% THC, as mandated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Regardless of whether it comes from hemp or marijuana plants, delta-9 is delta-9.

The term hemp-derived delta-9 simply refers to THC extracted from hemp plants, making it federally legal and available in nearly every state across the country.

Hemp-Derived Delta-9 vs. Conventional THC

At a molecular level, there is no difference between regular and hemp-derived delta-9. That means THC that comes from hemp can still deliver the intense, intoxicating effects many users seek, depending on the concentration.

The practical differences between hemp-derived delta-9 THC and conventional THC are in their potency at the product level. Most regulated cannabis products have no THC potency limits and contain higher concentrations between 15-25%. These products can be powerful and include:

  • Smokable cannabis flower
  • Edibles like gummies, candies, and cookies
  • Concentrates
  • Tinctures
  • Vapes

Hemp-derived delta-9 products come in many of the same forms and are legal as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC on a dry-weight basis. The key here is the term “dry weight.” Since there are no guidelines on dry weight for THC products like oils and edibles, manufacturers can get around federal potency limits with some creative math.

That means consumers can buy hemp products with delta-9 dosages similar to those found in regular THC products, and both product types can get users high.

For example, a moderate to high delta-9 THC dosage in a cannabis gummy is 10-20 mg, which produces a reasonably strong psychoactive experience for users. Hemp-derived delta-9 THC gummies often contain similar dosages yet still fall within the legal 0.3% limit.

Benefits and Uses

A massive benefit of hemp-derived delta-9 is it’s federally legal in the United States, making it safe to consume without fear of consequences.

From a health perspective, hemp-derived THC can have many potential benefits, like relieving anxiety, pain, inflammation, and more. Like conventional THC, hemp-derived delta-9 shares the same therapeutic effects, including:

  • Boosting mood and giving users a feeling of euphoria
  • Providing feelings of wellness, relaxation, and a sense of calm
  • Stimulating appetite and reducing nausea
  • Improving sleep quality and helping with insomnia

Potential Risks and Side Effects

Like THC from marijuana, hemp-derived products are generally safe with moderate use. However, there are some unwanted effects that can surface if you use too much or a product is too strong, including:

  • Paranoia
  • Heightened anxiety
  • Sedation
  • Confusion
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling uneasy, unhappy, or dissatisfied
  • Low blood pressure

Adverse effects are usually mild and often occur from taking too high a dose. Other potential concerns regarding hemp-derived delta-9 are linked to the much less stringent regulations in the cannabis industry for producing these products under the Farm Bill.

Dosage and Potency

It’s common to see hemp THC dosed at the same levels per serving as standard THC products sold in licensed cannabis dispensaries. However, consumers who may assume all hemp contains low, non-psychoactive THC levels could accidentally ingest too much and experience an unwanted high.

Testing and Quality

Regulated cannabis products undergo rigorous laboratory testing to ensure consumers receive a quality product free from chemical solvents, heavy metals, and other contaminants. However, the Farm Bill does not stipulate federal testing rules for hemp-derived products.

As a result, most states only require potency testing for compliance purposes, leaving consumers at risk of ingesting tainted or mislabeled products. Consumers should only buy from brands that publish a Certificate of Analysis (COA), a document that confirms the lab testing of any finished product and (generally) ensures its THC potency.

The Bottom Line

Hemp-derived delta-9 THC is molecularly the same as delta-9 THC from marijuana plants. It’s just extracted from hemp instead of marijuana. This makes it legal under federal law. However, this legality comes with some risks. Hemp-derived delta-9 is not required to undergo the same types of tests as THC from marijuana, so it’s important to ensure that any hemp-derived products you buy have a COA.
